Gastric Bypass – How Overweight Do You Need To Be To Have The Surgery?
I am about 40 pounds overweight, and I’m afraid that I will just get fatter as I get older. I eat healthy food and exercise regularly. I’m just a chunky monkey
Would I qualify for gastric bypass? Is it ever done as a preventative measure?

Not considered a preventive measure.
A body mass index over 40 would be a clear indication, but it’s not the only one, as a surgical procedure it has complications, patients must go under medical, psycological and nutritional evaluation in order to be accepted. Usually surgery is reserved for those cases where diet, pills and exercise have failed.
Many people who are oveweight do eat healthy food, but too much, I’d recommend you to go and see a doctor first, or a nutritionists, because if your diet is ok, maybe you have a condition that is causing the overweight.
Best wishes!

it all depends on your bmi you have to be morbidly obese to definitely qualify but in certain situations you have to be 100 pounds overweight and sum health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. When I had mines done in March 2008 I didnt have any health problems I was quite healthy but my height and weight made me morbidly obese I was about 85 pounds overweight but because i’m 4′11 that was definitely an issue because it gave swollen ankles and I was at the risk of all the health problems. But now I am still 4′11 but 123 pounds in just a couple of months. Good Luck!
