Complete Blood Count (CBC), Urinalysis, and a Chemistry Panel, which gives a readout of about 20 blood chemistry values.
Glucose Tolerance Test to evaluate for diabetes, which is very common in overweight persons, and frequently is undiagnosed.
Most persons, except the very young, get a Chest X-Ray and an Electrocardiogram.
A vaginal ultrasound (women only), to look for abnormalities of the ovaries or uterus, and a gallbladder ultrasound (everybody) to look for gallstones.
Other tests which which are frequently ordered when indicated include Pulmonary Function Testing, Echocardiogram, Sleep Studies, GI Evaluation, or Cardiology Evaluation.
Patients who have significant gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms such as upper abdominal pain, heartburn, belching sour fluid, may have serious underlying problems, such as a hiatus hernia, gastroesophageal reflux, or a peptic ulcer, will be closely monitored and referred to a GI specialist.

I had gastric bypass July 2003. Basic blood work, thyroid screen, pulmonary function, EKG and psychological exam were all that my doctor required. These were for the actual surgery. The girls in the billing department had the approval done b4 my initial consult was finished.
If you are in the Midwest or can travel to an excellent surgeon. Dr. Roger de La Torre at De Paul Medical center De Paul, Mo. is one of the premier surgeons in this field. My results were remarkable. Scaring minimal and recovery was a breeze. I recommend his clinic without reservation. They have developed a program that retrains your body to want healthy food after surgery so I have not had ANY weight gain post op. I reached my goal weight within 6 months (130 at 5′6″) I am thrilled with the results and feel this was the best thing I have ever done for myself.
