Why Is It Still Taboo To Criticize Obese People?

I understand that there are diseases, genetics, and other factors that affect weight but there is a point on the way to becoming so obese your life is threatened, that you realize you have to change.
In Ontario, if a certain BMI is reached, Ontario Health Insurance Plan covers the cost of getting a gastric bypass surgery or another extreme weight loss surgery. Gastric bypass is around $16000-$18000. As I tax payer, I don’t see why I should have to compensate for people who can’t control themselves. These people need help for mental disorders; not surgery.
We can judge people who smoke because of their addiction and express our belief/opinions of religion, etc., but it’s still so taboo to say ANYTHING to people about how wrong it is to be obese!!!
***When I say fat or obese, I don’t mean chubby. I mean people who are extremely unhealthy because of weight***

The same reason it’s “taboo” to criticize you for whatever I feel like criticizing you for.
If you think it’s fun to insult people, or that you’re helping someone by stating the obvious and in the process hitting them in their proverbial weak spot, then go ahead and criticize.
Edit: OK, your additionally added comments help.
So the solution is not to criticize, the solution is to offer more than just surgery. Way not offer education programs, diet consultations, and other productive services?
It is offensive to a smoker to have someone tell them all about the harmful effects of smoking. Do you really think smokers are so stupid that they don’t know this? Again… Don’t go up to a smoker and essentially call them stupid, since you’re paying for their health care, wouldn’t your money be better spent in smoking cessation programs and education?
Smoking is an addiction. Morbid obesity is a disease, whether mental or physical (hormonal, etc). Criticizing them doesn’t help. You telling someone that something they are or something they do is bad does nothing for that person.

WHAT?!?! Are you kidding me? How badly do you want to go around calling obese people names? Just where would you start? Why don’t you goad on alcoholics and ask them why they just don’t stop sucking on the bottle? Why don’t you go throw rocks at teenagers who become pregnant and then require assistance from the government to raise their bastard children? Who will grow up to shoot you in the head over the contents of your purse so they can score some drugs? This is by far the most ridiculous question I have ever read to date on Y.A. and I have read a ton. I usually only reply to people that I feel that I can help but this question sucked so bad I couldn’t resist! Who do you think you are Miss Perfection?
What do you propose for your tax payments for people who take a job that could affect their health and then become disabled because of that? Should those guys be kicked off health insurance as well? And the alcoholic who disables himself from his life of drinking? And the smoker who disables himself from a life time of smoking? I can only hope that someone will sit in judgement on you when you need health coverage.
Your question proves you to be a far bigger PIG than any fat person that the government might have to help. YOU are the one who needs the mental counseling you judgemental little snot!

I don’t get it either… but it is rude to insult anyone and I don’t really think it is a taboo… It’s just because it’s none of your business.. unless, they are someone related to you and you want to help them then insulting won’t help them anyway… other than that, if you don’t care, and it’s none of your business, why bother?

Well, I guess because someone who is obese isn’t hurting anyone else, except maybe tax payers…
Plus, obesity is everywhere. Besides, who says obese people aren’t criticized?

  5. Seabiscu Says:

Go ahead and criticize all you want, no one is stopping you. It won’t make you feel better and it definately won’t help them either. All that will happen is that you will fall further away from nirvana.

People who are obese know they are obese and calling attention to it isn’t going to help them.
